CASE STUDY OVERVIEW

Jiao is a sixteen year old with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Explore the science and issues surrounding stem cell donations and transplants in Jiao’s Case. Action 2 and Consolidation 2 and 3 are optional.

Suggested Timing: 3-6 class periods plus time outside of class

MINDS-ON 1: Introduction to Jiao’s Case

Students will read a fictionalized story about a girl with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) that will provide context for both the science inquiry and the ethics dilemma. Immediately after reading the case study, students will write down a “gut response” to the story and identify the dilemmas presented.

Suggested Timing: 10-15 minutes

MINDS-ON 2: ALL Collaborative Key Points

Students will use the Prepare-Assist-Reflect (PAR) strategy to focus their reading or viewing, filter pertinent information, and develop their note-taking skills in order to construct new knowledge about Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) which will form the foundation for learning about stem cell transplantation in patients with ALL.

Suggested Timing: 20-30 minutes

Action 1: ALL Science Inquiry

Students will compile, organize, analyze and interpret data in order to understand the processes and criteria involved in matching donors and recipients for stem cell transplantation.

Suggested Timing: 45-60 minutes lass time plus time outside of class

CONSOLIDATION 1: ALL Science Inquiry

Students will consolidate learning about the role of treating Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) using stem cells through the creation of a public service announcement (PSA) advocating stem cell donation.

Suggested Timing: 30 minutes class time plus time outside of class

ACTION 2: ALL Ethics Dilemma

[Optional]

Students will have a collaborative discussion to explore, in a respectful and thoughtful manner, the ethical issues in Jiao’s case, taking into account multiple points of view before coming to a conclusion.

Suggested Timing: 45-60 minutes plus time outside of class

CONSOLIDATION 2: ALL Ethics Dilemma

[Optional]

Students will consolidate learning about the ethical implications of treating Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) using stem cells through the writing of an Opinion Editorial (Op-Ed) paper.

Suggested Timing: 30 minutes class time plus time outside of class

CONSOLIDATION 3: Reconciliation

[Optional]

Students will consolidate learning about the scientific and ethical aspects of treating Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) using stem cells through the writing of an ending to Jiao’s case.

Suggested Timing: 30 minutes class time plus time outside of class
