Let's Talk Cancer - The University of Alberta

Let's Talk Cancer Research is a unique day-long event geared towards Grade 11 and 12 students hosted by Let's Talk Science and the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA) at the University of Alberta that happened on March 27, 2015. The goal of this event is to introduce high school students to the field of cancer biology and to make it accessible through engaging activities and demos run by experts in the field that do this type of research on a daily basis. We will be covering the challenges of researching what goes wrong when cancer arises, methods to slow down the growth of cancer and drug discovery into how to fight off and eradicate cancer.

We will bring these students into contact with researchers in this field and provide hands on activities related to techniques utilized by cancer researchers such as DNA analysis, cellular imaging of normal and cancer cells, histological/pathological diagnosis of cancer, the use of pre-clinical animal models to better understand cancer and a demonstration of the beneficial use of novel drugs. We are proud to showcase one of the University of Alberta's greatest local research strengths to coincide with the launch of our newest institute the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA).
