Question

Does Canada have a seed bank like the so-called Doomsday Vault in Svalbard, Norway? If so, what types of seeds are stored there?

Answer

Yes - in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, our federal agriculture department (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)) houses a collection of valuable seeds meant to safely house previous biodiversity. For crops that can't be stored in seed form, AAFC also has collections of crops in fields, like diverse apple orchards and grape vineyards. Here's an example: Apple Biodiversity Collection
