MINDS-ON 1: Transportation & You

As an introduction to this Action Project, students will watch a video which discusses Canada’s transportation energy use and impact as well as the role of youth as transportation users.

MINDS-ON 2: Vehicle Emissions

In this set of hands-on/minds-on activities ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE students will identify vehicle emissions and understand how vehicle emissions affect human health and the environment.

ACTION 1: Energy4Travel Data Collection

As the core of this action project, students will learn about the data collection protocols and will brainstorm questions to ask about the data. They will also collect their baseline data. Requires computer access

ACTION 2: Energy4Travel Data Analysis & Action Plan

In this set of activities, students will (1) analyze and interpret the transportation data that they have collected, (2) plan and implement an action plan to reduce their energy and GHG footprints and (3) assess the results of their action plans. Requires computer access

Suggested Timing: 60-75 minutes plus time outside of class

CONSOLIDATION: Impacts & Implications

In this final set of activities, students will: (1) create consequence maps which explore the societal, economic and environmental sustainability of energy use in transportation and (2) reflect on their participation in the action project.
