Describe what you do at work.
This is a bit difficult as my job description is so vast and things can change at the drop of a hat. The primary focus of my job is to work with people. This could be professional and amateur athletes as well as celebrities to give them advice on their nutritional practices to help them be healthier and to perform better in their sport or their life. A lot of this has to do with finding exactly what works best for that client in regards to supplements, foods and timing in relation to the sport or physical activity. Everyone is different and respond differently to nutritional and athletic interventions.

How does your job affect people’s lives?
Over the past 10 years, health has become intensely popular but not many people actually know anything about health. There are a lot of unregulated professionals out there that have no formal training and that’s a scary thing. Being able to provide scientifically accurate information to actually help someone achieve their health and athletic goals is how I positively influence someone’s life.
What motivates you in your career?
I’m always looking for ways to grow and learn. Luckily for me the field of nutrition and sports nutrition is constantly changing which really motivates me to grow and develop to best serve my clients and the people that work with me. I’ve always loved food, health and physical activity. Finding a job where I get to do all those things and make a positive impact on someone’s health is what keeps me going.

Describe your career path to this career.
This is a bit funny because originally I didn’t want to be a Dietitian. I wanted to be a Pastry Chef so I started working in restaurants and hotels in Toronto with that dream. My family didn’t like the idea of me being a Chef and a Pastry Chef as they thought it would be too hard on my body and health later on in life. so I was forced into a University program and I chose something at least related to food. This brought me to Ryerson’s Nutrition and Food program. I had every intention on failing in the first semester so I could justify going to Culinary School. Once that first semester started, I fell in love with nutrition and food. And before I knew it I became a Registered Dietitian which combines my passion for Culinary, Nutrition, Sports and Athletics.
What activities do you like to do outside of work?
There are too many to name. As an athlete I’m always training for the next triathlon or marathon, and when I’m not doing that I’m lifting weights. I also play a lot of video games, travel (a lot!) read, write, paint, play guitar and harmonica, sculpt, cook, bake and build my own furniture. I love doing different things and learning different skills!
What advice or encouragement would you give others seeking a similar career?
There’s a lot of advice I can give but the best advice I can give you is to be true and honest to yourself. I know that’s cheesy and cliché but it’s true. For years I tried to do what other people wanted me to do and I was never happy. When I started doing what I wanted to do then I became happier and had a more fulfilling career!
