Name: Michael Kuss

Age: 37

Born: Edmonton, Alberta

Profession: Meteorology

You see them all the time, usually preceded by a phrase like 'and now the weather...', but what is a career as a meteorologist really like?

What is a meteorologist?

A meteorologist is someone who studies, analyzes, and forecasts weather patterns

What is a typical day like for you?

I spend a couple of hours creating the forecast. I then design and build all of the graphics for the news. I shoot some promos and then do the weather on the 6 pm news. I do it all over again in preparation for the 11 pm news.

What music do you have in your CD player right?

I can't get enough of Sam Roberts these days.

Did you always want to be a meteorologist?

No. I really didn't think of it as a profession until I was already at the University of Victoria in my home town. I then transferred to a meteorology school in the U.S., Saint Louis University.

How did you decide where to go to University?

I researched schools with programs in meteorology and settled on Saint Louis U. They had a good program and they also offered journalism so I got degrees in both.

You just won a million dollars. What's the first thing you'd do?

Nothing different.

If you had to be a vegetable, what would it be and why?

Probably a Brussels Sprout. Not many people like them so I might live longer.

What courses in high school prepared you for this field?

Math and physics.

What was your favorite thing about high school?

Everything. I loved high school. Dating, Parties, Cars.

What is the last movie you saw? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

I saw this Scottish movie called On a Clear Day I think. It's about an old guy that loses his job and decides to swim the English Channel. It's pretty funny.

Was there extra training required for this career after you finished university?

No.

What is the coolest part of your job?

A lot of people would think it's being on TV, but for me it's accurately forecasting the weather (most of the time).

What's the worst part of your job?

It's all pretty cool. Getting the forecast wrong sucks.

What's your favorite hangout?

Anywhere I can snowboard.

What's one thing you can't do but really want to be able to?

Dunk.

Ooooops! Everyone makes mistakes so what was the dumbest thing you've ever done at work?

I fell asleep and when they came to me live on location I was snoozing. I wasn't on camera at the time but my mic was up and by the time I made it to the camera it was a pretty funny 30 seconds of TV.

What's the best thing about Canada?

The Mountains.

Any advice that you would give others seeking a similar career?

Get the degree and then find a small market station that will take you. You'll get the best experience there.
