Describe your career path to this career.
I grew up on a farm in Pefferlaw, Ontario. When you live on a farm you always pay attention to the weather! I guess that’s where my interest in weather forecasting started. After I graduated high school, I studied broadcast journalism at Loyalist College. This program prepares you for a career in ever-changing field of journalism. It emphasizes reporting, writing and editing skills for online, television, radio and print media. While at Loyalist College I got my first job reading and writing weekend newscasts at Quinte Broadcasting in Belleville, Ontario.
Shortly after graduation, I joined the Wolf 101.5 in Peterborough, Ontario, as a morning radio show co-host. In 2006, I became a Weather Specialist at CHEX-TV in Peterborough. And in June 2008, I joined CBC Newfoundland and Labrador. Later I went on to study and graduate from the Broadcast/Operational Meteorology Program at Mississippi State University. This program gave me advanced knowledge in climatology, weather modelling, and weather prediction. I am now endorsed by the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. I always loved weather and media and so my career is a perfect mix of both, which is why I enjoy it so much.
What activities do you like to do outside of work?
I play hockey a few times per week for fun. I also love to hike with my kids and dogs.
What advice or encouragement would you give others seeking a similar career?
Be sure to take your maths and sciences, but also drama and media studies.
